The Society for Transplant Social Workers was established to promote the availability of quality social work services to all transplant patients and their families. Our mission is to:

  • Promote professional excellence and ethical clinical social work practice

  • Provide opportunities for professional growth, communication and mutual support among transplant social workers

  • Advocate for the psychosocial needs of transplant patients and their families

  • Advance social work practice through education

  • Encourage research and publication on psychosocial issues in transplantation

The Society has grown through the years and now members represent all areas of solid organ transplantation. We hope you will learn more about the Society on the Web page and consider becoming a member. We also invite you to join us in the fall of 2010 in Atlanta, GA, at our annual conference.

Lee Suszycki and Judy Midelfort Memorial Awards

Lee Suszycki was the founder and first president of our Society. She was passionate about many things, including education, writing, publication, social work and transplantation. The Society for Transplant Social Workers is a direct outgrowth of her vision for social workers practicing in transplantation.

Judy Midelfort was a founding member of the Society, one of the first to publish on psychosocial issues in transplantation and a strong supporter of professional growth and education.

In honor of both Lee and Judy and their dedication to our Society, two memorial awards have been established. These are presented at each annual conference to two members of the Society who have made significant contributions to the field of social work in transplantation. Contributions include, but are not limited to, publishing, public speaking, research projects or developing new tools or programs. Applications should be forwarded to the President and should include a brief statement describing the nominee's contributions to the field.

Scholarships

Twenty scholarships which cover the cost of conference registration are available to members in case of financial need. Members may apply for the scholarships themselves or they may nominate a colleague. Applications will be accepted each year from October until August 1st. and should be forwarded to the Vice President of the Society. The application needs to outline why the funding is needed and whether a scholarship has been awarded previously. The executive committee will inform the applicant if the scholarship is awarded before the conference meets.
